ANDRZEJ URBANIK(born 1953)

A.UrbanikHe is a physician-radiologist, free-lance journalist and traveller. His hobby is history of civilisation – he is one of the few people who has examined egyptian mummies using X-Ray and CT as a part of research programme ( this programme including unwraping and then wrapping mummies).

He claims that the reason of his travels lies in the person of Robinson Cruzoe, because the first book read by Andrzej by himself was ‘‘The adventures of Robinson Cruzoe” edited by Daniel Defoe. Having read all adventurous books at a local library one summer on a vacation , Andrzej decided that one day he’ll become a explorer. During his studies, in the 70’s, he established The Cracow’s Tramping Expedition Organizers’ Club ‘‘Tramping Club” and he started to organise expeditions in different directions of the world on a large scale.

He does not count the countries he visited but they happen to be many (around 80) in Europe, Asia ,Africa, Australia, Oceania and both Americas. He does not count the countries he visited because he opposes the idea of ‘‘counting the world”. He visited some places more than one time ,and others even several times because he says that he prefers to visit more than once the places he loves, rather than going to a place just for the idea of improving one’s statistics. He twice travelled all around the world, once on his own for a period of six months in 1987 and the other time for a few month on the verge of 1991 and 1992.

He is free-lance journalist and the author of hundreds of articles and a few guide-books for globetrotters. In 1987 he edited the first classic Polish globetroters guide-book existing under the name of ‘‘Tramping guide-book: Birma, Thailand , Malesia , Singapore , Indonesia” With this guide-book a few generations explored this fascinating region of the world . He also issued a globetroter guide-book ‘‘China” in 1987, which also happened to be a pioneer undertaking. Andrzej was also the idea-inventor and editor of a unique collection of books called ‘‘Through the World” with reports of globetrotter travellers. He was also the chief editor of two tourist magazines , ‘‘Globetroter” and ‘‘Travel” and of two TV-programs ‘‘Through the World” and ‘‘Globetrotter”.

He created the tourist information centre ‘‘Travelbit” which acted all through Poland and of which Andrzej is the principal right from the beginning. But most of all he founded an “institution” called ‘‘The Polish General Tramping Tourism Organizers’ Meetings (OSOTT)” which apart from being the general meeting of Polish globetroters, is a symposium about high aquintance values of foreign tourism.

Andrzej also came up with an idea for another undertaking which is some sort of a course for globetrotter beginners called ‘‘The World for everyone - a globetrotter meeting” (also called The Globetroter Beginners’ Camp). For years in Cracow he leads cyclical meetings existing under the name of ‘‘Globetroters’ Club” . Lately , he also introduced ‘‘Travelbit” into the Internet.

Considered as the guru of Polish Globetroters, Andrzej obtained a nickname ‘‘Tourbanik”. He is married. He met his future wife on his way to China. The wedding of the adventurous couple took place on the Dannish island Borholm.
